"Ruach Hakodesh"

Dhuni, and the Pillar of Fire

Awake me with the Spirit of God,

O Lord, and ignite the flame within me

and let it burn Eternally!

The Dhuni (fire pit) at Nithya Nilayam is called Ruach Hakodesh. Ruach HaKodesh (Hebrew: meaning Divine Spirit, literally "Holy Spirit", also transliterated Ruah Ha-qodesh) is the term used in the Jewish Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and Jewish writings to refer to the Spirit of YHVH (the name of God).

“Dhuni is the Sacred fire made to honour the Spirit of God, Ruach Hakodesh. From the Pillar of Fire, the cosmic element that descends in the dhuni that burns eternally and from the ascending fire element of our nature, the transformation of consciousness arises. Fire is a manifestation of energy of which the whole universe is made. The fire offered stands for the cosmic consciousness, therefore Dhuni is the symbol of ‘Chidagni’ or Cosmic energy. Though the Pillar of Fire our prayers are sent to the Spirit of God, this is the most direct way for God to hear our prayers. Dhuni is the fire that burns all sins to ashes.”

Kriyaji distributes the 'Udi', sacred ash of the fire, to devotees as a token of grace and blessings to aide their progress and protection.

'The Pillar of fire and the Pillar of cloud symbolises God's presence with His people as they come out of sin, and as they trek toward the Promised Land. Without this pillar to guide, to protect, to comfort, to chase enemies, and to instruct us we would all die in the wilderness'. (from the Bible)

“The fire pit is the sacred mouth of God, therefore we offer to His Holy mouth the gift of the Spirit and the gifts of nature. May we feed him with fruits of the land, the immeasurable grace of His Creation return to Him in a form of appreciation and deep loving Bhakti. I honour the Mouth of God that with the tongues of fire annihilate the sins of men by the fire names that do exist in the Ether and in the Higher dimensions of Light.”
