What does Satsang mean?

“Sat” means Truth or good, “sang” means company or group. Satsang is the coming together of people in the company of Truth which is embodied in the Satpurusha.

A group of devotees forms around the One - Satpurusha - who has realized and embodies Truth on all levels. The Satsangi are those who honoured the spiritual vows of the Satsang group, and come together to sit with God to reflect on their path to enlightenment supported by the Satpurusha's pure light of awareness.

Satsang consists of the reading of scriptures and listening to the words of the Satpurusha, which are teachings that are aimed at transforming one’s consciousness. Sometimes passages of sacred scriptures, like the Bhagavad Gita, the Vachanamruta or the Bible, are read by the Satpurusha and delivered to the satsangi who reflect upon them and meditate, providing space for spiritual development and transformation, bringing their meaning into one’s daily life.

In the Sanatan Dharma the importance of a guru is incalculable. Every aspirant needs a guru for guidance on the spiritual path, so that the aspirant can progress on the correct path. Therefore the presence of the Satpurusha is priceless, making satsang the true Satsang. The Satpurusha is the true self-realised guru, not just a guru, but the embodiment of the Divine in human form, realised on all levels. With the help of the Satpurusha the aim of Satsang is to allow each individual, if they are willing to open to let go, to come into union with God.
